"La Leggenda"
is hidden in a twelve-acre wood, mainly of secular chestnut trees, at Selva, one
of the prettiest villages around the town of Santa Fiora. The
town, which is in the heart of the Mount Amiata foothills at about 2000 feet
above sea level, is
in the middle of a wonderfully uncontaminated, green countryside, with numerous
medieval villages, churches and castles rich with art and history.
Situated on the
slopes of Mount Amiata - also a winter ski-ing resort - it's worth visiting the medieval
town centre of Santa Fiora and also its famous "Peschiera" (fish-pond).
In the vicinity you can visit the Abbey of Abbadia San Salvatore,
Arcidosso and Castel del Piano, all easily reachable within fifteen to twenty
minutes.
Slightly further afield, about
forty minutes away in the direction of the sea, you'll find the warm sulphuric
waters of Saturnia - a famous spa resort - and the countryside of the lower Maremma.
Countryside rich in history, famous for its food and wine.
Near Saturnia, but slightly more
southwards, you'll find the small medieval townships of Pitigliano, Sorano and Sovana :
small masterpieces of the Etruscan heritage.
Northwards, in the nearby province
of Siena, you can visit the Abbey of Sant'Antimo; and make promise not to miss Montalcino
where you can taste one of the "Kings of Wine" ; don't forget to take a slight
detour to Pienza and Montepulcino and taste some of Italy's most famous seasoned
cheeses.
In a nutshell ... "La Leggenda"
and the Maremma countryside are here ... waiting for you !
